I misplaced my pocket knife during our move; I figured it would turn up as we unpacked. I finally found it - with the help of the airport scanners at SJC... D'oh. I had some time before the flight, so I went back out, filled out the forms to pay CheckPoint Mailers $9 per item to send it from San Jose to San Jose. Turns out these guys are not just exorbitant, they are really amazingly slow. Really really amazingly slow.
I dropped it into the bin on the 13th of September, it arrived today. Looking at the envelope, it appears that it was processed locally, probably by some sort of franchise, and sent through the USPS. It appears to have been mailed yesterday from the (nearby) Campbell post office; so it managed to take 31 days to travel approximately 7.6 miles from SJC to Campbell at a staggering average speed of roughly 0.0102 mph...
For reference: a "snail's pace" is about 0.03 mph
Sigh.
